Kambuwal Camping Area

Kambuwal campsites have these amazing fire- pits/grills. Nice for fire and for cooking!

Nestled among granite boulders and trees, Kambuwal offers a tranquil bush setting—perfect for small caravans, conventional cars, and various-sized tents.

  • Sites: Caravan/camper trailer sites, plus tent sites. Semi-shaded and more private
  • Amenities: Flush toilets, shower cubicle (BYO water and portable shower), picnic tables, fire rings (BYO firewood). Water is unfiltered—drink after treatment
  • Access & Feel: Easy 2WD access, shaded and flat sites, some close together

Pro tip: Secret spot! if you walk a couple of metres at the back of Kambuwal campsite, you will find a section where you can climb and find the best spot for sunset.

Terrawambella Camping Area

Designed for big setups, Terrawambella features wide-open grassy sites with sweeping views of The Pyramid and Castle Rock.

  • Sites: Larger dimensions, includes areas for camper trailers or educational group tents
  • Amenities: Flush toilets, shower cubicle (BYO), picnic tables, unfiltered water. Wheelchair-accessible facilities; no bins—carry your rubbish out
  • Vibe: Bright, social, minimal shade—best for large rigs or group stays

Castle Rock Camping Area

This mainstay blends grassy areas, tent platforms, shade, and group or accessible options.

  • Sites: Spacious grassy zones for groups, gravel sites for campers, and tent platforms at edges. Includes designated PWD-friendly sites near accessible toilets
  • Amenities: Flush toilets, shower cubicles (BYO), untreated water; shared wood fire barbecues
  • Use: Great for groups and accessibility, though can feel busy and exposed in summer

Booking and Access Notes


• Booking: You reserve the camping area only—not a specific site. Site selection is first-come, first-served
• Locations: All three sit along the southern side of Pyramids Road, about 260 km (~3.5 hr) from Brisbane; accessible by conventional 2WD
• Fees: Around AU$7.5 per person per night
• Facilities: No bins or generators allowed. Fires must use BYO wood, in rings only. Water must be boiled/treated

Packing Checklist

Here’s what to pack for busy winter nights or blazing summer days at Girraween.

Winter Camping Essentials (June-August)
• Warm base layers (thermal shirts, fleeces, wool socks)
• Puffy jacket or insulated coat + beanie and gloves
• Warm sleeping bag (recommended rating to 0 °C or lower)
• Sleeping pad for extra insulation
• Hot water system or solar shower (campground cubicles are BYO)
• Insulated mug and flask (for hot drinks)
• Sturdy boots (perhaps with gaiters if damp)
• Warm hat, scarf, and extra blankets
• Headlamp and spare batteries
• Portable stove and fuel (fires permitted, but bring your own firewood)
• First aid kit and thermal blanket
• Insect repellent (some insects can still be around)
